Salamanders Migrating

Every year an early March warm spell creates the perfect conditions for the Yellow Spotted Salamander migration at the James River Park. When daytime temperatures are about 60 degrees and there is a heavy rain the salamanders stir into action. That evening they trek toward their breeding site in a vernal pool near Pony Pasture.

JRPS Adopts Leave No Trace Principles

Leave No Trace

Beginning in 2018, the JRPS became a “Leave No Trace Parks and Municipalities Partner.” This initiative marks a big change for the JRPS and goes beyond the “Pack it in, Pack it out” rule many of us are familiar with.

2018 National Invasive Species Awareness Week

Join members of the JRPS Invasive Plant Task Force, starting Feb. 25 for a week full of events designed to raise awareness, highlight solutions and provide hands-on opportunities for you to join the campaign to remove invasive species from the Park. Activities will be held in multiple locations throughout the park system and include botanist-guided walks, observing goats as they munch offending plants or getting in on that action by helping free-a-tree.

2017, a Year of Achievements

Last year your financial support and volunteers’ time made a big difference in the JRPS. We are proud of what has been accomplished and grateful to the many dedicated, hard-working people who together make it possible too keep our Park an area of unspoiled natural beauty — a little bit of wilderness in the heart of the city.

Join the Friends for Our Annual Solstice Celebration

Plan to join the Friends and Park Staff on Thursday, December 21, 2017 from 5 to 7 pm for our annual Winter Solstice celebration on Belle Island for a convivial observation of the time when the days once again start to grow longer.

Ancarrow Wildflower Photographs Delight, Inform

Newton Ancarrow, a Richmond boatbuilder, environmentalist, and James River Park advocate, took thousands of wildflower photos in the 60s and 70s. Now these beautiful images, documenting more than 400 species, are available digitally through the efforts of the VCU Library in conjunction with the VCU RICE Rivers Center and Lewis Ginter Botannical Gardens.
