Take a Class with JRPS Education Staff

Our programs seek to improve the quality of access to the Park’s unique ecology and recreational opportunities. We draw on the Park as the cornerstone of outdoor adventure education in the City of Richmond and as a critical educational tool to instill environmental literacy and stewardship in this community. By improving residents’ access to, and knowledge of, James River Park, we seek to create a physically, emotionally, and environmentally healthier city for everyone who lives, works and plays here.

Registration

Programs are held year round and registration is required for most events. Program fees or suggested donations help support programs for under-served youth and elementary school students in Richmond.

Environmental Science & History Tours Programs

Come visit the Pump House for a brief tour of its remarkable history! The building will be open and tours will leave approximately every 30 minutes.

Come join us on Belle Isle at the Quarry Pond for a relaxing day of fishing for all ages! A wonderful opportunity for amateur and expert anglers alike. We will teach basic fishing knots, casting, and how to land the big ones. All rods, reels, bait and tackle will be provided by the park. Virginia state fishing licenses are required for anyone 16 years of age or older. They are available online for $16 annually. Visit the VDGIF website.

Join us for a family friendly hike to one of Richmond’s historic gems, Belle Isle. Learn about the geologic and human history of the area and the role Richmond played in the development of our nation. Please bring water, a snack and good shoes.
The early bird gets the worm! Come out for a few hours of early morning bird watching. Seasoned veterans and fledgling birders are invited to help each other build skills and contribute to the birding community. Bring a water bottle. Binoculars provided.
Gather after sundown for a sneaky stroll through the park in search of elusive owls. Audio playback may be used to draw owls in, or we will listen for them ourselves. Please bring a bottle of water and come prepared to hike.
