This quiet spot is an active launch pad on the James River. Outfitters launch River Tours from here, and the Richmond Fire Department uses it to practice water rescues. While this is a walk/bike in spot only (no parking), it’s popular with picnickers, waders, and bird watchers. Patient wildlife fans can spy bald eagles, osprey, great blue herons, otters, and more.
Caution
Experienced kayakers surf the waves at Z Dam, but the hydraulics make it dangerous to swimmers and waders.
