Pony Pasture is one of the most popular spots in the Park, with opportunities for sunbathing, splashing in the James, launching a canoe or raft, and more. In addition to hiking and biking trails, there are also multiple spots to sunbathe and enjoy paddlers braving the Class II Pony Pasture Rapids. Pony Pasture is also integral to the history of the Park. The Scenic James Council was formed in 1966 to preserve Pony Pasture from a proposed highway along the south side of the river.
