A New Conservation Initiative!

Dear Friends

We are thrilled to share a monumental step forward in the stewardship of our beloved James River Park System (JRPS)! The Natural Resources Management Plan (NRMP) for the James River Park System has officially been completed, marking a new era of comprehensive and strategic conservation for this invaluable urban wilderness.

This groundbreaking plan is the culmination of a dedicated partnership between the James River Park System staff, Friends of the James River Park, the JRPS Invasive Plant Task Force, and local subject matter experts. We are especially grateful to Biohabitats who expertly produced this detailed and forward-thinking document. Their scientific rigor and commitment to ecological health have been instrumental in shaping a plan that will guide our conservation efforts and the development of recreational assets in the JRPS for years to come.

The NRMP is more than just a document; it’s a blueprint for the future health and resilience of the JRPS. It provides a science-based framework for understanding, protecting, and enhancing the Park’s diverse ecosystems. Key areas addressed in the plan include:

  • Strategic Invasive Species Management: A detailed roadmap to combat pervasive invasive plants that threaten native flora and fauna.
  • Native Habitat Restoration: Guidelines for re-establishing thriving native plant communities that support local biodiversity.
  • Sustainable Resource Use: Principles for balancing recreational opportunities with ecological preservation.
  • Capacity Building: A framework for expanding staffing and involving volunteers in the important work of natural resource stewardship.

This plan represents a shared vision for a healthier, more vibrant James River Park System. It equips us with the knowledge and strategies needed to tackle complex ecological challenges, ensuring that the Park continues to be a thriving natural haven for both wildlife and people. We believe the NRMP will serve as a powerful tool, enabling us to make informed decisions and implement effective conservation actions that will benefit generations to come.

Funding for this plan came from our friends at the Virginia Department of Forestry through a grant made possible by the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. Friends of the James River Park was responsible for initially paying for the plan and was reimbursed as phases were successfully completed. We are grateful to our government partners for making this possible.

Stay tuned for more details on how the NRMP will be implemented and how you can continue to be a part of these exciting conservation efforts!
