Every month the Friends of the James River Park spotlights an individual who is passionate about, and dedicated to our greatest natural resource in Richmond, the James River Park. This month’s ParkStar, Cassi Patterson, tells us why the Pump House Park is so special to the history of Richmond, and why it deserves to be preserved and restored.
Richmond’s Pump House was originally built in the 1870’s as a way to get fresh water from the James River into Byrd Park, then into homes in the city. Renowned for its Gothic architecture, gathering space, special events, and more. As the city’s growth outpaced the capacity of the Pump House in the 1920’s, the city constructed a new pumping station directly next to the original historic building. The need to preserve this historic building is what drives volunteers, friends, and historians to the site. Click below to learn more about the Pump House, and how you can help.
