Event Details

Help keep the “woods” in Huguenot Flatwater Woods.  Most of this area’s mature trees are being smothered by invasive wintercreeper. You can make sure they survive for decades to come so they can shade and cool the park, provide habitat for wildlife, and contribute to a healthier James River.

Please register for this event  on Hands On Greater Richmond

If you have difficulty registering, please contact Laura Greenleaf at laura@jamesriverpark.org

PLEASE NOTE: 8200 RIVERSIDE DR. LOCATION.  NOT THE MAIN ENTRANCE ON SOUTHAMPTON.    Location is small parking lot next to Riverside Drive by trailhead with small kiosk. This is just east of the Huguenot Bridge and across Riverside Drive from Oxford Parkway.   Do NOT  go to the large parking lot/boat launch at the Southampton Road main park entrance.  See map at the end of this announcement.

Volunteers will use small hand tools–pruners and handsaws–to cut wintercreeper and English ivy vines climbing trees and then clear a buffer around the base of each tree.

Tools and work gloves provided.  Feel free to bring your own work gloves if preferred.

VOLUNTEERS MUST:

  • Wear long pants, long-sleeved shirts, and sturdy closed-toe shoes or boots (clothing should completely cover ankles). Leggings and materials that easily snag are discouraged.
  • Bring a water bottle.
  • Arrive on time for orientation and to reach work site. Leaving earlier than noon is fine, but please arrive by 9:00 a.m.
