Progress on the Belle Isle NEA!

You may have seen some activity on Belle Isle near the pedestrian bridge. It’s the makings of a new Nature Exploration Area (NEA).

The Belle Isle Nature Exploration Area (NEA) is a nature-based play area built from driftwood, boulders, milled logs, and wood fiber. The NEA has experiences designed for kids ages ten and under, with sensory-centered and ADA friendly modules. Located under the Richmond Highway bridge in the center of the island, parts of the NEA are protected from direct sun throughout the day. Its design will make it resilient in floods, easily re-composed by Park staff, and inviting to families visiting the James River Park System for the first or fiftieth time. Park visitors can expect the area to be under construction through the spring of 2026.

This project is funded through Friends of the James River Park, thanks to the generosity of the Robins Foundation, Second Presbyterian Church, CSX, and your individual donations. The Nature Exploration Area was designed by Marvel, is being constructed by James River Park System staff, and will be fabricated by Truetimber Arborists.
