SAVE  TREES IN HUGUENOT FLATWATER WOODS!

Please register for this event on Hands On Greater Richmond

Location: 8200 Riverside Drive (NOT the main entrance on Southampton!)This is the area of Huguenot Flatwater EAST of Huguenot Bridge. Do NOT go to the main parking lot with the boat launch.

Most of the mature trees in this part of the James River Park System are being smothered by invasive wintercreeper. You can make sure they survive for decades to come so they can shade and cool the park, provide habitat for wildlife, and contribute to a healthier James River.

Work with a JRPS invasive plant management coordinator and other volunteers to control invasive vines to save the park’s trees.

Volunteers will use small hand tools–pruners and handsaws–to cut wintercreeper and English ivy vines climbing trees and then clear a buffer around the base of each tree.

Tools and work gloves provided.  Feel free to bring your own work gloves if preferred.

VOLUNTEERS MUST:

  • Wear long sleeves and long pants that completely cover the ankles.  Leggings and materials that easily snag are discouraged.
  • Wear sturdy closed-toe shoes or boots.
  • Bring a water bottle.
  • Arrive on time for orientation and  training and to reach work site.
