Event Details

Free-A-Tree at Huguenot Flatwater (invasive plant management in JRPS)

Location: 8200 Riverside Drive (NOT the main entrance on Southampton)

Register for this event on Hands On Greater Richmond

Most of the mature trees in this part of the James River Park System are being smothered by invasive wintercreeper. You can make sure they survive for decades to come so they can shade and cool the park, provide habitat for wildlife, and contribute to a healthier James River.

Work with a JRPS invasive plant manager and other volunteers to control invasive vines to save the park’s trees.

Volunteers will use small hand tools–pruners and handsaws–to cut wintercreeper and English ivy vines climbing trees and then clear a buffer around the base of each tree.

Tools and work gloves provided.  Feel free to bring your own work gloves if preferred.

VOLUNTEERS MUST:

  • Wear long pants, long-sleeved shirts (strongly recommended), and sturdy closed-toe shoes or boots (clothing should completely cover ankles). Leggings and materials that easily snag are discouraged. If it is cold, dress in layers–you will get warm quickly!
  • Bring a water bottle.
  • Arrive on time for orientation and  training and to reach work site.
