Volunteers play a vital role in the life of the JRPS. From invasive species removal to planting natives, from picking up litter and getting rid of graffiti to maintaining our Facebook page, we count on volunteers to get the job done.
Who volunteers?
Schools, individuals, scout troops, retirees, civic groups, non-profits, and the numbers don’t lie; in 2017 over 1,800 volunteers spent over 7,000 hours working to maintain and improve the Park for the enjoyment of all. The impact of their service is evident throughout the park.
Follow these steps!

7 Or if structure isn’t your thing, on-your-own trash pick up is always appreciated. Snorkeling for trash is just one of the do-it-yourself fun times you can have in the park. Thanks in advance!

Join the all volunteer Friends of the James River Park!
Friends of the James River Park engages thousands of park volunteers throughout the year. From litter removal, tree and native species planting to organizing special events or manning a booth at Dominion Riverrock, FOJRP offers volunteers the opportunity become directly involved in the protection, preservation, expansion and improvement of Richmond’s greatest resource.
All FOJRP activities take creativity and coordination to pull off. If you’d enjoy fundraising, event planning, new projects and solutions, or are interested in joining our board, we’d love to hear from you!
Friends of the James River Park sponsors a volunteer project the second Saturday of the month (September through May). Details for these projects should be posted prior to the event to allow time for volunteers to sign up. Register in advance is required at Handsonrva.org
