Virginia Capital Trail
Trailhead Located in the Park
The 52 mile Virginia Capital Trail is a dedicated, paved pedestrian and bicycle trail that connects Williamsburg and Richmond along the Scenic Route 5 corridor. The trailhead for the western terminus can be found in Great Shiplock Park. This enjoyable connector is the result of a successful public-private partnership, which began with the July 2005 groundbreaking at the Greensprings Road portion in Williamsburg, and was completed in the October of 2015 with the dedication by Governor Terry McAuliffe.
As part of the trail’s construction, Great Shiplock Park underwent a $450,000 renovation in 2013. And the partnership between the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and the Virginia Capital Trail Foundation (VCTF) ensures the trail is maintained, enhanced, promoted and continually developed to provide a safe and wonderful experience for all.
