Saturdays in the Park with Friends

You've got a date with the James River Park and the Friends to wrangle some invasive species this fall. Please join us at 1pm at Pony Pasture on October 22 & 29; November 5 & 12. If that's not your thing, we'll also de-litter Riverside Drive on November 19.

If interested, please contact [email protected] to register. You can also check Facebook for updates.

Questions for Parks & Rec.

Do you have a question for the City of Richmond's new Director of Parks, Recreation & Community Facilities? We certainly do. In fact, we look forward to welcoming Dr. Norman Merrifield at one of our world famous board meetings this fall. If you've got a question for him regarding the James River Park System, please email [email protected] and we'll pass it along. Based on your responses, we'll take the top questions received by October 31 and publish the findings in the next e-newsletter following the meeting.

A little background: Dr. Merrifield was most recently the Administrative Executive Officer & Director of Cincinnati Recreation Commission. He's had a long career in parks and recreation that has also taken him to El Paso, TX; Minneapolis, MN; Fort Wayne and Bloomington, IN. He received his Bachelor's and Doctorate from Indiana University.

License Plate Latest

OK, here it is. The DMV and the Friends are waiting for the metal prototype to arrive from the vendor for approval. After that, the DMV will need to order the metal sheeting, make the things, and then mail them out. According to the DMV's time line, we're looking at the end of January to March of 2012 to get these license plates bolted to our cars.

To recap: we collected 380 license plate applications and fees from 2009 to the end of 2010; had our license plate legislation passed by the VA General Assembly in January 2011; and submitted the applications and a large check to the DMV July 2011. The Friends will not see any financial proceeds from these plates until the 1001st one is sold.

Thank you for your patience and support! We'll keep you posted here and on Facebook.
