Meet FOJRP's New Board President Katherine Mitchell

Katherine is the Vice President of Community Engagement for the Community Idea Stations, and has served on the executive committee of the FOJRP Board for the last five years. Last year, she headed up the Master Plan task force and worked with then Park Superintendent Nathan Burrell and other Board members to raise $250,000 for the development of a Master Plan for the James River Park System. The project was green lighted in August. She now serves on the Master Plan steering committee with FOJRP Vice President Mary Kay Martin and is on the committee interviewing for the new Park Superintendent.

She raised her two boys, Eagle Scouts from Troop 444, hiking and helping with clean-ups in every area of the James River Park system. A member of Seal Team PT for the last 15 years, she fell in love with the Park watching the sun come up over the city during the 5:45 am workouts, and even met her husband in the Park. She became a member of FOJRP the night she met Nathan who was speaking at a Leadership Metro Richmond function.  She said "I love the Park. I use the Park. I want to go to the only party at the Pumphouse each year for FOJRP members only. I HAVE to be a member of this organization." She also believed strongly in Nathan's desire to develop a Master Plan for the Park and that is why she joined the Board.

The Master Plan is a major priority for the Park this year, and will be completed by the end of the Summer in 2019. When asked about the Plan, she says "I am excited about having a shared vision of what we want our Park to be and the process--starting next month through the Spring--of gathering input from all Richmond city neighborhoods and people who love and use the Park."

Katherine is available to speak to groups interested in learning more about the master plan and can be reached at [email protected].

Volunteer Days are Back
The Friends' monthly volunteer projects are back in full swing after a short Summer break. Volunteers will visit a new park location each month for trash pick-up, trail maintenance, graffiti and invasive plant species removal, and overall clean-up and beautification. Projects have been posted for November 2018 - May 2019, so you can save the dates and register to volunteer for these projects now. Thank you for giving your time in support of the Park!
