Stop 10: Stains and Strains

DIRECTIONS: Walk about 18 m (20 yd) towards the middle of the river channel under the access bridge to Belle Isle. Note the unique pattern of thin lines in the rocks. (37.526670° N, 077.453553° W)

This striated pattern is called GNEISSIC BANDING. When the rock was under extreme pressure, the minerals realigned themselves in bands that ran perpendicular to the direction of stress.
