Stop 7b: The Curbstone Quarry

DIRECTIONS: Walk about 10 yards in the downstream direction and look to your left. You will see a pool of water surrounded by chunks of angled rock. (37.526367° N, 077.454473° W)

Granite is an excellent building material because it is very hard and can be split into blocks. The granite here weighs  2,690 kg per cubic meter (168 lbs per cubic foot), meaning that even small blocks are difficult to transport.

Curbstone Quarry

Around you are unfinished pieces of granite that were abandoned due to the collapse of the granite market with the introduction of concrete as a building material. This quarry was abandoned in the early 1900s.

Note the size of these pieces. How heavy do you think these rocks are?
