View of the south side of Belle Isle during Hurricane Camille in 1969. The James River rose to the bottom of the decking of the bridge in the distance.

River flow fluctuates with precipitation events. Floods occur here when storm events, such as hurricanes, drop large volumes of rain water upstream.
