South Geology Tour

Stop 5: You're So Vein

DIRECTIONS: Walk 5 paces downstream. Look for long bands of coloration in the rocks around you. These are VEINS. (37.526183° N, 077.454835° W)

VEINS are cracks that are filled with minerals. The minerals were injected as a molten fluid into cracks and then crystallized as fluid cooled.

Veins are a type of INTRUSION, usually composed of a single mineral, such as quartz or feldspar.

Veins and Offset Veins in rock

Offset Veins: A zig-zag pattern occurs when rock cracks and shifts along small faults due to pressure (stress).
