South Geology Tour

Stop 8: Slickensides

DIRECTIONS: Turn around and walk downstream about 9 m (10 yd). You will see a rock ledge about  30 cm (1 ft ) high. (37.526425° N, 077.454258° W)

The rock ledge before you is a remnant of quarrying that took place along a FAULT.  It formed underground during tectonic movement. As the sides of the FAULT shifted, the rock faces slid against one another, glazed the surfaces, and created  a feature known by the German word SLICKENSIDE.

slickensides

Rub the face of the fault. The surface feels smooth in one direction and rough in the other. The smooth direction indicates the forward movement of the rock.
