Stop 10: The Quarry Pond

DIRECTIONS: Continue along the gravel trail until you reach the porta-johns. Walk down onto the fishing pier on your left. (37.52870° N, 077.45601° W)

This pond is the site of an old granite QUARRY. On your left are the walls of rock from which stone blocks were cut. This mass of granite once extended into the river.

Note that the walls HAVE NO CRACKS OR VEINS. This is high quality, “healthy” rock that can be cut into large perfect pieces that do not split or crumble along irregularities.

granite and soil

Look to your left at the hillside to see the soil and vegetation that has developed atop the hard granite underneath.
