Stop 6d: Smooth and Groovy

DIRECTIONS: Find the large rock that appears to have been split in half. (37.52959° N, 077.45529° W)

The inside surfaces of the crack have polished, grooved sides that create mirrored faces called SLICKENSIDES.

smooth and groovy

This rock cracked during tectonic movement. As the cracked pieces shifted and slid against one another, frictional forces scoured the surfaces.

Rub your fingers along the inside surfaces of the fracture. It feels smooth in one direction and rough in the other. The smooth surface was created as the rock slid forward.

grooves in rock

Arrows show the direction of movement.
