Stop 8: Shape Up

DIRECTIONS: Find rocks with square edges and chisel marks. (37.52959° N, 077.45529° W)

Not all of the rocks have a rounded shape. Some have squared off edges and others have irregular, rough shapes. These pictures are NOT the jawbones of an extinct river creatures! These rocks have been cut by human hands and machinery.

chisel marks in rock

You can determine which rocks were quarried by their shapes: rocks that have sharp right angles were cut, and rocks with odd angular shapes resulted from blasting. Granite is being used to stabilize the river banks along Belle Isle.
